Tanzania - Mountain Bike Tour – (16 Days)

Nairobi (Kenya) to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) - including Zanzibar

Our Tanzania biking tour offers diversity - a range of biking terrain combined with fantastic scenery! Jam-packed with National Parks and game drives, this tour offers the opportunity to see the Big Five, Mt Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro crater and the stunning beaches of Zanzibar.

Tanzania has stunning landscapes - from the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro to the Rift Valley. This trip offers biking as it should be - off the beaten path and great fun!

This trip can be tailored to suit everyones interest and abilities. It does not matter what your fitness level and experience, we can tailor the rides to suit. Non biking partners are welcome to join us too.

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Namanga (Kenya)

Arrive in Nairobi (Kenya) late afternoon and be greeted by your tourguide. We will be transferred to the Namanga River Hotel, which is situated 160km south-west of Nairobi at the Tanzanian border. The drive is approximately 3 hours. Accommodation:Hotel Meals:Dinner . Cycling / Elevation: No biking

  • Day 2: Namanga (Kenya) to Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania)


We travel by bus via Arusha (Tanzania) to the world famous Crater Rim at 2000m,which takes about 6 hrs (300km). The journey takes us through hilly farmland with cornfields and coffee trees. On the way we build our bikes and leave them in a local village for the time being. Our accommodation is on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim.   • Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater (Hole-Hole is the Masaai name)


Today we have a full day game drive into the famous Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, where there is an excellent chance of seeing the Big Five (elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalos and with luck leopards, plus much more such as giraffes, baboons, hippo etc). During the middle of the day, when the animals are more elusive, we will have our picnic lunch beside a lake. Our destination today is the small town Mta Wa Mbu at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment. Accommodation:Camping Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation: No biking

  • Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater to Songota Village (via Arusha)


In the early morning we take a game drive through Lake Manyara National Park, which stretches for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600m high Rift Valley escarpment. We will see flamingos and pelicans and with a little bit of luck lions resting in trees. In the afternoon we travel to Arusha and visit a Masaai market. It is a pleasant city, due to its moderate weather, beautiful countryside and lively music scene. Accommodation:Hotel Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Biking: short ride

  • Day 5: Arusha to Sanya Juu


Today we start biking to Longido, Tinga Tinga and onto Sanya Juu. This is through Masaai land and savannah, where we have a good chance of spotting herds of zebra and antelope. We have a great view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Lunch is under the shade of massive Acacia trees. Tonight we stay in a basic lodge run by a Christian Lutheran Mission where we cannot have any alcohol during dinner, but donʼt worry, a local pub is nearby…. Accommodation:Basic lodge shared facilities Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:70 km / 300m.

  • Day 6: Sanya Juu to Moshi


We cycle along the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro through rain forest, banana and coffee plantations, where there is plenty of opportunity for contact with the local farmers. Moshi (the city of smoke) is the capital of the Kilimanjaro region and the coffee producing centre of the country with its well known Arabica blend.Accommodation:Hotel Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:70 km / 800m

  • Day 7: Moshi to Gitingeni


We leave Mt. Kilimanjaro and head to the North Pare Mountains, which lie 35km south-east. This area is popular with birdwatchers, as we bike along a railway line. We see sisal, sugar plants and giant baobab trees. After lunch we enjoy a long downhill before we reach our tent village. Accommodation:Camping Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:50-80 km / 500m

  • Day 8: Gitingeni to Mtae


Today we experience the beautiful and lush area of the Usambara Mountains - a welcome retreat from the Game Parks and cities. First we ride 15km to the main road and then transfer by bus for the next 100km. This will take about 3 hours. The trails are rough and after 15km we have a 1000m climb to reach the village of Mtae in the Usambara with amazing views "out of Africa". Accommodation:Camping Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:55-65 km / 1200m

  • Day 9: Mtae to Muller`s Lodge in the Usambara Mountains


This day offers ʻparadise-likeʼ biking in this well cultivated farmland area, dotted with many small villages. We stop in one village to sample the local coffee, tea or beer. Our accommodation tonight is at a mountain lodge built in 1935 located at 1700m amongst rolling forested hills above Lushoto, the main town of the region. The lodge is solidly built of brick and is renowned for its splendid and well-cared for woodwork and furniture. Accommodation:Muller`s Lodge Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:70 km / 300m

  • Day 10: Muller`s Lodge in the Usambara Mountains


We welcome a rest day today! Of course there is the option for some single trail riding to the Lushoto market. This region is the main food source of fruit and vegetables for Tanzania. Anyone who wants to, can catch a lift in our bus, or just stay at the lodge and switch off! Accommodation:Mullers Lodge Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation: 75 km / 1500m

  • Day 11: Muller`s Lodge to Korogwe


Todayʼs biking is through tea plantations to the south edge of the mountains, followed by a long downhill out to the plains. Accommodation:Camping Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:70 km / 500m

  • Day 12: Korogwe to Pangani


This is a long day. We ride a mostly flat route alongside sisal plantations and palms to the Indian Ocean. Our accommodation for the next two days is a small friendly lodge built in a coconut grove on the shores of Tanzaniaʼs mainland, just opposite Zanzibar Island. Accommodation:Hotel Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:115 km / 300m.

  • Day 13: Pangani


Pangani is an ancient town and is believed to have been established before the 6 th Century BC. A walk through the town shows buildings that are over 200 years old. You can visit the Pangani Falls, which provide electricity to several mayor towns or just relax on its beautiful beach and enjoy a well-earned rest. Accommodation:Hotel Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:No biking

  • Day 14: Pangani to Nungwi


A very early boat transfer (before sunrise) takes us to Nungwi at the north end of Zanzibar, known as the 'Spice Island', because of its production of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. The boat trip takes about 5 hours. Our accommodation tonight overlooks the sea to the distant island of Tumbatu and its lighthouse. The beautiful white, coral and seashell beach is the perfect place to enjoy an incredible sunset. Accommodation:Hotel Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation:No biking

  • Day 15: Nugwi to Zanzibar


Zanzibar Island is a destination that has lured traders, adventurers and explorers to its shores for centuries and for visitors nowadays, the contrast to mainland Tanzania is quite startling.

We explore the island by bike ending up at the main town called ʻStone Townʼ. It is the cultural heart of Zanzibar and has remained relatively unchanged for 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses. You can spend many idle hours just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways. Today we ride on single speed local bikes. In the meantime our bikes will be transported to Dar es Salaam, as we are unable to take them on the small plane. Accommodation: Hotel Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - Cycling / Elevation: 50 km / 100m

  • Day 16: Departure Day: Stone Town (Zanzibar) to Dar es Salaam


Transfer to the airport for our flight to Dar es Salaam. Meals: Breakfast
