Brazil - Brazil's Beaches by Bike (9 days)
Brazil is an immense country, rich in history and culture. This bicycle journey travels through the state of Bahia, known for its pristine beaches, small islands and friendly people.
Cycling this part of Brazil is a unique experience. We spend our days on the bikes on well-paved back roads where we are more likely to spot monkeys than cars. In the afternoons you can relax, swim in the waters of the turquoise ocean, walk along the sandy beaches or join an impromptu song and dance session with the locals.
We begin in the state and country's first capital, Salvador. We cycle south following palm fringed beaches through small colonial towns passing cocoa plantations and national parks. To traverse this dynamic landscape we use our bikes and also ferries, 4WDs and canoes.
Our cycling adventure ends close to the town of Porto Seguro where we will assist you with onward journey arrangements to visit more of this extraordinary country.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 - Salvador - We start in the city of Salvador with a group meeting in the evening and an optional trip to the Tuesday night festival in the old city of Pelourinho. We leave the city the following morning with our first ride that afternoon.
Days 3-4 - Marau Peninsula - Cycling through villages to a small port we leave our bikes behind to explore the sandy beaches of the Marau Peninsula. We traverse the peninsula on 4WDs to be reunited with our bikes in the surfing town of Itacare
Days 5-6 - Cocoa Coast - Following the coastal road we tackle a few short hills passing the historic city of Ilheus. We spend our evenings in restored colonial towns a reminder when this section of the country was home to families made wealthy through their cocoa and sugar plantations.
Days 7-8 - Porto Seguro - Using canoes to travel through the mangrove forests of the coastal fringe we continue cycling south as the landscape slowly changes from forests into resort towns close to the popular beach town of Porto Seguro
Day 9 - Trancoso - Our final cycling day is one of the most challenging as we take the national park road with its many steep uphills. Your reward is the quiet village of Trancoso, a perfect place to relax after your Brazil by Bike experience.
